Who is this Anakin?
There was an ancient jedi prophecy about one who would bring balance to the force.

In Tatooine, a remote desert planet far away from the empire, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn discovered a little slave boy who was very strong with the force. He sensed an incredible force potential within that boy. The little boy was the only human who could handle podracing. On top of that, at that young age of 9, he was so technically skilled, he could repair anything and even built the prototype of droid C3PO. That little boy was Anakin Skywalker.

Anakin won his freedom in a pod race. Qui-Gon Jinn was certain that Anakin was the chosen one. Together with his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, they brought Anakin to the Jedi Council for Jedi training.

The Jedi council felt that Anakin was to old to start Jedi training as Jedis are usually selected and trained from infancy. The ways of the Jedi are very strict. Jedis are to have complete control over their emotions.

A Jedi Shall Not Know Anger. Nor Hatred. Nor Love

Little Anakin proved his strength with the force and his courage by piloting a star fighter into the heart of the enemy Droid Control Ship, firing topedoes into the reactor, destroying the ship, crippling the enemy. The Jedi council then agreed to let Anakin train as a Jedi. He became Obi-wan Kenobi's padawan.

When Anakin Skywalker first met Queen Amidala, he had a major crush on her. He was 10 and she was 14. Later, as a Jedi padawan to Obi-Wan Kenobi, they met again. This time, Anakin and Obi-wan were to protect Padme Amidala from assassins. Obi-wan pursued the assassins while Anakin was left behind to protect Padme at all times. In the romantic setting away from the war, Anakin and Padme fell in love. It was a forbidden love as Jedi are not allowed to love.

Anakin had nightmares of his mom dying. Disobeying Obi-wan's direct order, Anakin went back to Tattooine to find his mother.

She had been missing for a month

Anakin searched for her and found her dying in an encampment of Sandpeople who had kidnapped and tortured her. She died in his arms. In a rage, he killed all the sandpeople in that camp. He returned to Padme in tears over his mom.

Anakin and Padme eventually married secretly. Padme became pregnant. Anakin and Padme were overjoyed. They knew that Anakin would probably be expelled if it were found that he was the father, and Padme would probably lose her seat in the senate, but they viewed the baby as a blessing. Then Anakin had a nightmare of Padme dying. He had such nightmares of his mom before she died. He could not bear living without her and sought out a way to protect her from death.

All along, Chancellor Palpatine had been a mentor to Anakin. A friend Anakin trusted since he was a kid. Anakin had been impatient to rise up the ranks of the Jedi. By then, he was a full fledged Jedi Knight. To whet up his appetite for more, Palpatine put Anakin in the Jedi Council. He was way too young to be there. Only Jedi Masters who were very much older were given a seat in that esteemed council. Anakin was overjoyed, but disappointed to find that although the Jedi council allowed him to join them, they would not grant him the rank of master.

Palpatine continued to manipulate impressionable Anakin. At this critical time, Obi-Wan Kenobi was sent away on an assignment. It seems that everytime Obi-wan is away, Anakin sucuumbs to temptation.

Anakin was troubled about his dreams of Padme's death. He went to Yoda who advised him to let go, to be detached, that death is a natural part of life.

Palpatine, secretly a sith lord knew what was on Anakin's mind and told him a story about a Sith Lord who could prevent those he cared about from dying. That power is only found in the dark side of the force.

When Palpatine revealed that he knew the dark side, Anakin realized that his mentor Palpatine was a Sith Lord. His feelings were mixed as Palpatine alone held the secret to life. Still, he did his duty and reported this to the Jedi Council who went to arrest him.

At the 11th hour, while with Padme, broken hearted about Padme's impending death his dreams had prophesied, he turned and rescued Palpatine.. not that Palpatine needed rescuing anyway. That Sith killed all but one of the Jedi council seconds after he drew his light saber. Still, when Anakin appeared, Palpatine looked pleadingly at Anakin asking him to save him. Anakin chopped off Mace's hand and Palpatine finishes him off. That was the turning point. Anakin knelt before Palpatine and pledged his allegience to the dark side. Anakin Skywalker was no more. Henceforth, he was Darth Vader

Now what about the prophecy?
Anakin could well have been the prophesied one for in Return of the Jedi, in a rage against Vader's threats on his sister, Luke Skywalker, his son defeated him in battle and the Emperor Palpatine told Luke to kill Vader, Luke saw how he was following his father's footsteps. He refused, proclaiming he is a Jedi, like his father before him. Palpatine proceeded to kill off Luke with his lightning bolts.

Darth Vader could not bear to see his son killed and Anakin Skywalker returned. He broke away from the dark side, lifted up Palpatine and threw him to his death, ending the rule of the final Sith Lord.

At any time, there are only 2 Sith Lords, the master and the apprentice. When the master dies, the apprentice becomes a master, and chooses another apprentice to eventually succeed him, thereby ensuring the continuity of Sith rule.

In this case, Palpatine was the master, Darth Vader was the apprentice. With Palpatine dead, Vader would have been the master, but as he turned away from the dark side, and then he died, there were no more Sith Lords. In death, Anakin Skywalker fulfilled the prophecy.
