Avengers
The Avengers are Marvel comics answer to DC's Justice League.
The difference being that there are fewer active avengers as compared to active members of the justice league, as well as the membership at the Avengers changes constantly. There could be as few as 3 members to as many as 15 members in the Avengers at any one time.
In a universe where heros are feared and anyone with special powers is feared and looked upon with distrust, the Avengers stand out. Usually headed by Captain Marvel (there have been other leaders before, leaders are elected, with Iron man and vision having been chairmen before), the Avengers are trusted by the United States government so much that for a time, their computer is linked to U.S. governmental and military information networks to facilitate their fight against crime or any threat to mankind. The Avengers were even granted official government sanctions by the National Security Council, the United Nations, and the SHIELD.
The original Marvel Avengers included Iron Man, Wasp, Ant Man, Thor and Hulk. Iron Man, Anthony Stark, a very wealthy industrialist, eventually donated a 3 storey 8-bedroom mansion to the Avengers for their exclusive use, to function as their headquarters as well as living quarters for its members. He even set up a foundation to cover the expenses of the Avengers, so this is one superhero unit that needs not worry about paying the bills.
Various marvel superheros came and left the Avengers. These include Vision, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Hercules, Black Widow, Moondragon, Hellcat, Ms. Marvel, Falcon, and Captain Marvel.
