Spiderman tore his costume in a battle in outer space. He came across this magical black fabric that could take the shape of any outfit he liked, so he used that to make his black spiderman costume. What he did not know then, was that this black fabric was an alien that wanted to bond with him.
During the period when Peter wore the symbiote, the creature learnt all his secrets. It bonded with Peter and could read his mind. After the war was over, Peter returned back to his regular life. The symbiote did not accept being separated from Peter and while Peter slept, it would blanket himself on Peter's body. With the help of the Fantastic Four, he removed the symbiote. Even then, the symbiote returned to his apartment and masqueraded as a spare red and blue costume. Once Spiderman knew that the symbiote, he tried to remove it using the loud noises of church bells.
The symbiote left Peter on its own accord, was found by Eddie Brock and bond with him to become Venom. That was the story of the original spiderman comics.
