There are 2 main Captain Marvels. DC's Captain Marvel, which used to belong to Fawcett Publications and the Marvel comics Captain Mar-Vell.
DC's Captain Marvel
The Captain Marvel we know today is a little boy Billy Batson, who becomes Captain Marvel when he utters the word, SHAZAM!Billy, a 10 year old boy, was orphaned when Black Adam killed his parents. The ancient wizard, shazam, took the boy through an ancient hallway and asked him to say his name.
When Billy uttered Shazam, a bolt of lightning struck him and transformed him into captain marvel. A grown man with the wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.
Later, as Captain Marvel, Billy battles Captain Nazi. Captain Nazi kills a young boys uncle and breaks the boys back, crippling him. Captain Marvel rescues the boy and brings him to the wizard, pleading with the wizard to restore Freddy. The wizard could not make Freddy walk as Freddy, but gave him a portion of Captain Marvel's powers instead. When Freddy says Captain Marvel, the bolt of lightning appears which transforms him into Captain Marvel Junior, with the same powers that Captain Marvel has. But as Freddy Freeman, he is crippled.
Billy's twin sister Mary, became Mary Marvel whenever she says Shazam.
Marvel's Captain Mar-Vell
Captain Mar-Vell is an alien. From Kree. He was spent as a spy on earth, but when he found out his superiors' true intentions, he defected to protect earth instead. He was caught by his people and sentenced to the Negative Zone. He contacted Rick Jones and was able to swap places with Rick through Nega- Bands. Whenever Rick struck the Nega- Bands together, they would swap places so that Captain Mar-Vell would be able to fight any threat Rick might encounter.Later, Captain Mar-Vell was able to rescue Rick from the negative zone, so that the 2 of them could co-exist together on earth.
In a battle against Nitro, Nitro released a cannister of nerve gas. Although Captain Mar-Vell was able to seal the cannister, the gas had already affected him and eventually, he died of cancer due to that exposure.
His grieving lover used his genes to conceive a child, Genus, who grew up at an accelerated rate and continued his father's legacy, as Captain Marvel.
