Darth Vader was feared among the rebels. Vader led the Emperor's troops to annhiliate the entire Jedi Order. He wiped out the Jedi. The peacekeeping, powerful, selfless Jedi of the old Republic were practically extinct, thanks to Vader. Darth Vader was a merciless dark lord.

Yet he had a particular interest in young Luke Skywalker. In The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker fought each other in a light saber duel. Actually, it was no fight. Vader could kill Luke Skywalker easily.. if he wanted to. The catch was he did not want to kill Luke. He wanted Luke to join him. The reason.. to the shock of the entire movie going audience.. Vader told Luke that he was his father. Vader was Anakin Skywalker. A Jedi knight. Obi-wan Kenobi's Padawan and partner. Famous for his exploits in the Clone wars. A hero.. until he was seduced by the Dark Side of the force.

Instead of killing Luke at the end of the duel, he cut off Luke's hand and let him go. The rebels gave Luke a robotic hand which served as a constant reminder of what his father, now mainly robotic parts, has become and as a warning not to follow in his father's footsteps. In Return of the Jedi Luke seeked out Vader again, and this time, turned him back from the Dark Side.. or rather, Darth Vader had to make a choice.. The Emperor was killing his son. Vader stepped in, saved Luke, killed the Emperor and ended the evil reign of the Sith.

But how did Anakin Skywalker become Darth Vader?
The Movie, Revenge of the Sith tells the tale of Anakin. The wrong choices he made, that eventually led to his downfall.

The emperor promised him power. More importantly, the ability to stop people he loved from dying. He had premonition that his secret wife was soon to die and the Dark side of the force beckoned promising the power to save her.

There are many parts to this.
First, as a Jedi, he was not to take a wife. As he had a secret wife, he was already in violation of the Jedi rules. He could be expelled for that and his career would be finished.

Palpatine was like a father figure to him. Having watched over him from the time he was a little boy, Anakin trusted Palpatine. Palpatine manipulated Anakin.

Anakin was frustrated about the slow progress he was making as a Jedi. He was impatient at first to be a Jedi Knight while he was still Obi-wan's Padawan. His abilities were clearly that of a Jedi Knight already. Palpatine fanned his frustrations further by putting him in the Jedi Council long before he was ready. That is meant only for Jedi Masters. The Jedi Council accepted his place there but did not grant him the rank of Master, which frustrated him further.

Anakin had joined the Jedi order when he was around 10. The Jedi order is very strict. Jedis are to have total control over their emotions and are raised to be Jedis from infancy. As he joined later in life, his control over his emotions was weaker. He formed strong attachments to his family, while Jedis are to stay detached.

In spite of his good intentions, Anakin slowly edged towards the dark side without realizing it. The crux of it came when Palpatine revealed himself to be a Sith. Anakin told the Jedi Councils about it but regretted it. He believed Palpatine to be the only one who could help him save Padme, his secret wife, from certain death. He attacked Mace who was about to kill Palpatine. Palpatine then killed Mace and made Anakin his apprentice, renaming him Darth Vader.

His first mission as Darth Vader was a brutal one. To go to the Jedi temple and kill off everyone there. Even the little children. That he did. Massacred even the little kids.

Obi-wan and Yoda found out about it and how completely Anakin had turned and become an evil Sith Lord himself.

Reluctantly, Obi-wan was tasked to find and kill Anakin, who was like a son to him.

Obi-wan sought Padme's help to find Anakin. Padme found him and told him about the horrible things she had heard. She asked him to return to her, forget about his new mission and just be with her and her unborn baby. Anakin found Obi-wan had accompanied her and accused him of turning her against him. Full of rage and jealousy, he strangled Padme with his telekinetic power. Then he and Obi-wan engaged in a light saber battle.. one of the best in the Star Wars Movies. At the end of it, Obi-wan defeated Anakin and left him for dead. His legs were chopped off. His body burnt by the volcano, yet Anakin, was still alive, full of hate, anger and bitterness.

Palpatine rescued him and had his medical team reconstruct his body with robotic parts. Hence, the Darth Vader we knew from the Original Star Wars movies, was born.
