Frodo
Frodo Baggins is a hobbit. Definitely the last thing you would associate with superheros. Yet in the story, Lord of the Rings, it is this unassuming hobbit that had the most dauntic task. The most heroic duty to fulfill. Everyone on middle earth was depending on this little hobbit to complete his mission.
Sauron, the dark lord was taking over middle earth. His dark shadow was spreading. His power was growing. He was churning out countless evil creatures, orcs, and the like to be his minions. His sorcery and powerful servants, like the ringwraiths struck terror all over middle earth.
His weakness?
He vested most of his power in that one ring. A magical ring he created to rule over 19 other rings of power. That ring was cut off from his hand in his earlier defeat. Once he gets hold of that ring, his dominion would be complete. His terrible power would be magnified and he can no longer be challenged.
That ring had fallen into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, who in turn gave the ring to Frodo for safe keeping.
Now, to save his world, Frodo had to destroy the ring. The only way to destroy that one ring was to drop it into the cracks of mount doom, the place where Sauron forged that ring.
The problems were many. Mount Doom is where Sauron himself resides. That meant Frodo had to go right into the enemies territory, into the most dangerous place in middle earth. The journey there would take him through unimaginable terrors.
Frodo was a simple hobbit who was brave, intelligent and good hearted. His kindness can be seen in his treatment of Gollum. Forgiving, though watchful. More serious than the other 3 hobbits. Not surprising though. The one ring that hung around his neck was a heavy burden. It wanted to go back to Sauron, or at least to someone weakminded enough for it to control.
The closer Frodo got to Mount Doom, the heavier the ring became. The ring had a life of its own. It was resisting its doom. It knew that Frodo was headed to Mount Doom to destroy it, so it did all it could to hinder Frodo. It even tempted Boromir, to get Boromir to try to take the ring by force from Frodo. After all, men are weaker in their resolve than hobbits or elves.
Frodo had special gifts to assist him in his quest. The mithril coat he wore under his clothes, the magic sword Sting that would glow when orcs are nearby, both given to him by Uncle Bilbo Baggins. From Lady Galadriel, he was given an elven cloak, elven bread and a vial of light. The cloak camouflages him, making him invisible when he hides beneath it. The elven bread lasts a long time and a single bite can sustain a grown man for a day. The vial of light pierces through any darkness, which he must face on the way to mount doom.
