In brightest day in darkest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power Green Lantern's light. So goes the classic oath Green Lanterns take whenever they charge their power rings.

There was a time when the green lantern corp existed to protect the universe from evil. They were sent by the guardians. Little blue men with white hair from Oa. These harmless looking men were immensely powerful beings, each like a living power battery. They could manipulate or create anything they wanted with their will alone.

The green lanterns were chosen for their strong will and complete lack of fear. Each green lantern was given a power ring, with a portion of the power the guardians have. The ring had to be charged every 24 hours for it to work. With that, he could use his will to do anything imaginable in order to fight evil. To be like a super powered policeman for this sector of the universe. The weakness of these rings is yellow. Its power is useless against anything yellow, which is why Hal Jordan, the second green lantern's nemisis, Sinestro, with his yellow power ring was a hard foe to beat. Ironically, Sinestro was once a green lantern, he was actually Hal Jordan's trainer in the Green Lantern corp.

Alan Scott the first Green Lantern

Before Hal Jordon, on earth one, a different dimension from the earth Hal lived in, there was the original green lantern, Alan Scott. Alan's power came from a green lantern, from China, made of a meteorite. This meteor was actually from Oa, part of the magic the guardians had banished and which landed on earth. The lamp talked to Alan Scott and told him to make a ring of its metal and to touch the ring against the lamp to charge it. Alan Scott was the first green lantern in DC comics and the weakness of his power was wood. His power was useless against wood, in the same way Hal Jorden's ring was useless against anything yellow

Hal Jordan, the greatest Green Lantern

Back to Hal, who was by far my favourite Green Lantern. He was killed off in the 4 issue story about the sun eater, where he sacrificed his life to stop the sun eater from destroying Earth and every other planet in its path.

Hal Jordan, was a test pilot. A fearless man. One day while testing a flight simulator, he ended up beside a dying alien instead. This alien Abin Sur, was a green lantern. Part of the duty of a green lantern is to find a successor worthy of that role and hand over the ring and the role to that successor. The nearest fearless person was Hal, so Hal received the ring and the job.

Hal Jordan went on to be the greatest of the Green Lanterns.

The love of Hal Jordan's life was Carol Ferris, the daughter of his big boss, when he was working as a test pilot. Carol Ferris later became Star Sapphire, Green Lantern's nemesis.

Hal had one complex career. From the model green lantern, fearless, cool headed, calm and collected, he later became rather spineless. Quitting his job when Carol married another man.. hey, I though Hal was made of tougher material than that.

When Cyborg destroyed Coast City, Hal Jordan went made. He tried to resurrect the people there. He went on a mission to gain power, destroying everyone in his way, fellow green lanterns, even the guardians, absorbing power as he went along, to become Parallax. Then he tried to use the newfound power to recreate the universe, the way he wanted it to be, with coast city untouched by the destruction, with his friends and neighbours, the people in Coast City alive again. The repercussions of that would have been destructive and he was stopped by the other superheros.

Hal Jordan later redeemed himself in earth's darkest hour when he absorbed the sun eater and died in the process. Well, no one really stays dead in the DC world, so Hal is coming back as the Spectre.

Green Lantern, John Stewart

John Stewart was chosen as an alternate green lantern in case something happens to Hal Jordan, kind of like his backup. In the course of his battles, John Stewart became crippled. But just before Hal gave his life to destroy the sun eater and save the earth and the rest of the planets, Hal stopped by to see John and to heal him. As Hal's power was no longer tied to a power ring with a time limit, this cure was permanent.

Green Lantern Guy Gardner

Guy is probably the most aggressive of the earth green lanterns. Guy is part Earthling part of an alien warrior race. He loves to pick fights which he does, for fun, with sparring partner, Green Lantern Kilowag.

During the Crisis of infinite earths, Guy Gardner was recruited as a Green Lantern. As green lantern of the earth, Guy became a founding member of Justice League international.

Kyle Rayner, the current Green Lantern

Hal Jordan had wiped out the green lantern corp and killed off the rest of the guardians, leaving Ganthet as the last surviving guardian. To save the legacy, the guardian Ganthet chose Kyle to become the last green lantern.

Kyle is a struggling young artist is now with the Justice League as Green Lantern.
