Justice League
The Justice League of America started off with just Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and Black Canary. (Ok, before the zero hour story, the founding heros were Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, J'Onn J'Onzz and Aquaman but after the DC universe was destroyed and recreated, the original JLA membership changed quite a bit.)
The founding members of the JLA first came together to fend off the warring aliens from Appelax and subsequently, got the permission of the U.N. to form an organization to protect earth from future alien invasions.
In any case, time and again the Justice League has been disbanded and started over again with a different set of superheros from the DC universe. At times, there could be as many as 2 dozen superheros as active members in the Justice League. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are key members of the team. Other members include Hawkman, Green Arrow, Captain Marvel, Plastic Man, The Atom, Elongated Man, Zatanna, Firestorm, Fire and Ice, and basically, any superhero on earth might be called up by the Justice League should the need arise.
The Justice League used to have its headquarters in a satellite that circles around the earth with 2 active members on duty each time, ready to respond to calls for help worldwide. They have even had their headquarters on the moon too.
Justice League is usually called upon to deal with threats that come from beyond the earth. Alien invasions, interdimensional foes and things way beyond the scope of the police or armed forces.
Currently, there is the Justice League International, Justice League Europe, Justice League Elite and Justice League Task Force together comprising of dozens of superheros, both the well known ones as well as the lesser known heros.
