Marvel Girl
Marvel Girl is the x-men code name for Jean Grey, a telepath.
The second most powerful mind in the x-men. Jean started off as a telepath. At the age of 10, her best friend died in an automobile accident. The shock jump started her latent telepathic power and she experienced her friend's emotions as she died. Jean was unable to control her power so she had to stay away from people in order to stay sane.
Eventually, her parents brought her to Professor Xavier for help. He set up psychic shields in her mind to prevent her from using her powers until her mind was ready to handle them. Professor Xavier trained her to harness her telekinetic powers as well. Her parents enrolled her in Professor Xavier's highly exclusive school for gifted youngsters, not knowing that was a cover for the x-men operations. Jean Grey became Marvel Girl, the 5th member of the X-Men.
Marvel Girl has quite a colorful history. A former model, Jean is quite a looker. Cyclops (Scott Summers) and Wolverine (Logan) both fell for her. It was Scott that Jean eventually chose, after having been with Logan for awhil. Wolverine continued to express his interest in Jean, even though she and Scott were clearly a couple.
In a fateful trip back to earth, after defeating Steven Lang's Sentinels, Jean and the x-men involved in that adventure encountered a solar radiation storm. The pilot would not have sufficient shielding against that storm. Knowing the danger, Jean volunteered as the pilot of that space shuttle. Her powers were not enought to protect her from the radiation, and Marvel Girl, as we knew her then, died, only to have the phoenix-force take over her body. This being brought way more power than Jean was trained to handle. The phoenix force could destroy worlds at its whim. Jean's morals kept the phoenix force in check and from Marvel Girl, Jean Grey became the Phoenix.
Unfortunately, The Mastermind coerced Jean Grey into becoming the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club. He brought out the dark side of Jean's personality. Hence, Dark Phoenix was born. Even after breaking out of the Mastermind's control, the immensely powerful Dark Phoenix continued to wreak havoc. Jean's personality took over briefly and in front of her sweetheart,Scott Summers, Jean Grey, the Phoenix killed itself, to prevent the Dark phoenix from ever taking over again.
Scott was grieved and ended up marrying Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean.
Later, the real Marvel Girl was found in a pod. Her telepathic powers were gone but her telekinetic powers were stronger than before. The dark phoenix was not Jean. In the space shuttle, the phoenix-force sense Jean's distress and offered Jean her heart's desire, which was the survival of her team mates and herself. Jean accepted. The phoenix-force became like her and took over from there, bringing them to safety, while putting Jean in a pod to recuperate. The phoenix-force came to believe it really was Jean Grey and did what Jean would have done, sacrifice itself to prevent the Dark Phoenix from ever taking control again.
Eventually, Madelyne went mad and became the Goblin Queen. Goblin Queen and Marvel Girl (the real Jean Grey) eventually fought. The Goblin Queen died in that battle, leaving Scott free to finally marry Jean.
