Spider-man

Spider-man is everyman's hero. Under that mask, anyone of any race could be spider-man. His powers may be out of this world, but his problems are what regular people face. Money problems, relationship problems, job problems.. the works. He is a universal hero that seems so real. I guess that is part of his appeal.

Spider-man's powers

Spider-man has the proportional strength of a spider. Initially, how strong he was depended on the writer of that story. Eventually, they settled his strength as being strong enough to bench press 10 tonnes.. more if he is under stress.

Spider-man is very fast. He can move fast enough to dodge bullets. Actually, his spider sense helps him with that. He has some premonition ability in that he can sense danger before it happens. He knows where the bullet will hit and instinctly dodges bullets. He can fine tune that sense to dodge rain drops so he stays dry even while swinging around the city in on a rainy day.

Like a Spider, Spider-man can climb walls. His hands stick on to any surface for as long as he wants to. He can walk up a wall and stand upside down on a ceiling. An ability that scares the wits of some more cowardly criminals.

Spiderman travels from place to place by swinging Tarzan style, from building to building using his webbing. In the comic books, that webbing is something he used his gift in Science to create. In the movie, he shoots the webbing from his wrists as part of the powers he received from the spider.

The original origin of spider-man

Before he became Spider-man, Peter Parker was a science nerd. One fateful day, according to the original story, Peter was bitten by a radioactive spider in a lab. In shock, he left the building. He felt wierd.. different somehow. He did not see where he was going and walked in the way of a oncoming car. He jumped out of the way.. and found himself stuck to the wall, several stories up a building.

The frightened Peter grabbed on to a metal pipe that ran along the wall. That pipe crushed like paper under his grip. He landed on the ground on his feet, shocked at what happened. He bumped into a bully twice his size who swung at him and hit him hard, yet Peter did not feel anything. His reflex action caused him to swing back but missed and hit a lamp post, breaking the lamp post in two, which effectively frightened off the bully. Peter realized that the spider bite gave him these incredible powers.

Peter Parker did what most real people would if in his shoes. He tried to use his power to earn some extra income. Using his science genius, he made web shooters and a fluid that had the properties of a spider's webbing. He fashioned a colorful red and blue costume for himself and joined showbiz as Spider-man.

A robber ran past him and Peter could have stopped him to help the victim, but his new power got to his head and he just stepped aside and let the robber go.

That robber murdered Peter's Uncle Ben, who was like a father to him. Peter, an orphan, was brought up by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May.

Driven by guilt, Peter got out of show biz and used his powers as Spider-man to fight crime, so that no innocent person would die because of his lack of action.

Movie version of Spider-man's origin

Peter's background is the same in the movie. The details of his origin as Spider-man differ slightly.

Peter and his classmate were on a field trip, where they saw genetically enhanced spiders. One species in particular had been engineered so it had the abilities of several different spider species. Strength, speed, and even a spider sense. That genetically modified spider escaped and bit Peter. Peter fell really sick and collapsed when he got back to his room at home. He awoke the next day, with his body transformed. Before the incident, he needed glasses to see clearly. That morning, he awoke with perfect vision, in great shape.

He was late and chased the bus and caught up with it. He touched the side of the bus and the part of the bus stuck to his hand and peeled off. In the cafeteria, he discovered more of his newfound powers. Mary Jane slips and falls and Peter, with his new speed and agility catches her. He accidentally shot out a webbing which hits a tray of food. He jerked his hand back and that tray of food lands on the bully who comes after him. He leaves, the bully picks a fight with him and his newfound speed, spider-sense and strength come into play. Each blow the bully throws misses as time slows down for Peter and he easily dodges every blow. He hits the bully and sends the bully sliding all the way down the hallway. He leaves and realizes what has happened. He tried and could climb walls. He could even leap across roof tops and eventually used his webbing to swing tarzan style across the city.

The rest of the origin follows the comic books closely.

Spider-man's origin revised in the comics

With the ultimate spiderman, Spiderman's powers came from being bitten by a spider that had been treated with Oz. A serum created by Harry's dad, Norman Osborn to give the recipient of the serum great strength, agility and speed. The school was on a field trip to Norman's lab when that spider escaped and bit Peter. Peter fainted.

Norman paid the hospital bills to avoid a possible lawsuit. Since Harry is Peter's best friend and Peter's Uncle Ben and Aunt May are very forgiving, good hearted people, they did not sue Norman. Peter recovered but Norman's people were sent to observe Peter, since he was bitten by a spider treated with their secret serum. Peter was able to climb walls and even jump over a car that was meant to run him down, to kill him.

The rest of the story is more or less the same as the original comics and the movie.

The words 'With great power comes great responsibility', from Uncle Ben, while he was still alive, haunt Peter, and drive him on as Spider-man.
