X-men

X-men are mutants. While regular humans are homo sapiens, mutants are the next step in evolution. They regard themselves as the homo superiors.

In the marvel universe, anyone with powers that normal humans lack, are viewed upon with fear.

Humans fear and hate mutants and want to get rid of mutants. Not surprisingly, many mutants are bitter and have turned against, humans, these are led by Magneto. Magneto believes that humans and mutants cannot co-exist, that for mankind to survive, the genetically inferior humans must die so that mutants may live.

Professor Xavier and Magneto

On the other side of the kind, Professor Xavier, trains and leads his students, the x-men and teaches them to protect the very humans who hate them. Professor X believes that for mankind to survive, both mutants and humans must co-exist peacefully.

Professor Xavier an Magneto are the two most powerful mutants of all. With Magento, previously known as Magnus, his power is obvious. He usually displays the full array and magnitude of his power, striking fear and awe into the hearts of those who see him. He reaches deep into the earth and draws his power of magnetism. He can control anything that contains metal. Blood contains iron, so with his power, he can immobilize and even kill an entire army of humans or mutants instantly, at his whim and fancy. His daughter, Lorna Dane has that power too, but she joined the x-men and is known as Polaris.

As for Professor X, his is the most powerful mind on the earth. He can manipulate the minds of anyone, he is a telepath and has some telekinetic ability, though his telekinetic abilities are not as powerful as marvel girl's.

Professor X is unable to walk. To the world, he is the disabled but brilliant professor who runs this highly exclusive school for gifted youngsters (mutants). to those in the know, he is a telepath, who prefers to communicate by putting his thoughts into the minds of others, rather than to communicate verbally. Unlike Magento, Professor X rarely engages in battle, prefering to let his x-men take center stage. He intervenes only if his x-men fail.

Appearance-wise, Professor X looks like a weak link in the x-men. Yet one to one, with his mental he is able to overpower and defeat Magneto, where not even the combined power of his x-men could take Magneto down. See The Uncanny X-men issue 304

Ironically, Xavier is probably the only real friend Eric (Magento) ever had. For a time, they had a common dream of a better world. Eric was a bitter man for a reason. As a child, he was in a concentration camp with his family. His entire family was killed there. As a man, his daughter Anya died as he was prevented by a crowd from reaching her in time. His powers manifested then, killing people and making him a wanted man.

For a time, he and Professor X were allies. He was with Professor Xavier and the X-men. Magento and Professor X are like 2 sides of the coin.

Cyclops and Havoc

Cyclops (Alex Sommers) is the field leader of the x-men. His optic blasts can disintegrate a normal human instantly. Unlike the other mutants, cyclops cannot control his power. As a kid, in a plane crash, he and his brother Alex (who later became Havoc) were put together in one parachute to bring them to safety, while their parents stayed in that crashing plane. While going down to safety, Scott was hit on the head damaging the part of his brain that would otherwise control his powers. When his powers manifested themselves, an optic blast shot out from his eyes and hit a crane causing it to fall. To prevent the crane from hitting passerbys, he opened his eyes to shoot out another blast that disintergrated the crane. That led to a frightened mob out for his blood.

From then on, Scott kept his eyes closed and went around as a blind man, afraid of opening his eyes, knowing the destruction his optic beams could cause. Scott was the first mutant enrolled in Xavier's school for gifted youngsters. Professor X created a ruby visor which was immune to Scott's optic blasts, so Scott could see again, through the visor without causing damage. Out of costume, he would were glasses with lenses made of ruby, to prevent the optic blasts from damaging whatever he looks at.

Alex has powers similar to Scott, or rather, his power comes from the same extra dimension as Scotts. Alex is able to blast out energy that similar to Scott's beams. Alex, the younger brother is less disciplined and more impulsive than his very disciplined and sensible elder brother. The Sommers brothers are among the most powerful x-men around.

Rogue

Rogue is another interesting character. Rogue is an energy vampire. Her body would automatically absorb the memories and abilities of anyone she touches. Her powers surfaced when she was kissing a classmate and her body absorbed his energy, putting him into a coma. She is able to borrow the powers of other mutants or super powered being by just touching them. After Mystique took her under her wing, she started off in The third Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. In a battle against Ms Marvel, she absorbed Ms Marvels powers and memories and even persona permanently. After that, she joined the x-men in a bid to control the incredible power she now had.

Other x-men

There are many other characters in the x-men. Wolverine, Jean Grey or Marvel Girl and Cyclops are a love triangle. Both Wolverine and Cyclops love Jean, while Jean loves Cyclops.

Then there is Bobby, the Iceman, whose power is to lower the temperature to sub zero temperatures, creating ice from the water vapour in the air, or to freeze things.

There is Storm, whose ability is to manipulate the weather at her whim and fancy.

These are some of the x-men who look very human, so you would not be able to tell that they are mutants, unless they actually use their powers.

Some of the other x-men aren't so lucky. The beast is a big blue and hairy so at a glance, you would know he is not a normal human. He is extremely agile and highly intelligent. Warren, codename, Angel, has wings, which he hides most of the time out of the safe confines of the school to look normal.

The x-men are fascinating. The vast array of personalities, relationships and brilliant characterization play as large a part in the success of the x-men. The powers, creative storylines and all make the x-men very addictive.
