The Human Torch or Johnny Storm has the power to burst aflame and create flames of varying intensity and control that flame. He can go up to supernova temperatures, the temperature within the sun.
That said, ordinary clothing would not do for the Human Torch, He would end up burning everything he wears. His clothes and costume are made of materials from unstable molecules, so that they would not burn even when he flame on.
Johnny Storm got his powers on board the space ship together with Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grim. They encountered cosmic radiation which mutated their bodies, changing their DNA, giving them their powers.

While the rest of the Fantastic Four were initially worried, maybe upset, about their changes, Johnny Storm totally relished his newfound powers and the fame that came with it.
